Did you know?
The tradition of carving pumpkins actually stems from an older European custom of carving turnips. In Irish folklore, there is a story about a man named Stingy Jack. He tricked the devil into not taking his soul. After Jack died, he was condemned to wander the earth with only a hollowed-out turnip and a burning coal inside to light his way. People in Ireland and Scotland would carve faces into turnips or other root vegetables. They created “Jack’s lanterns” to ward off evil spirits on Halloween night.
When Irish immigrants came to America in the 19th century, they brought their Halloween traditions with them. In the U.S., pumpkins, which were larger and easier to carve than turnips, became the preferred choice for making lanterns. Pumpkins were also more plentiful in America, making them an accessible and practical option for many families.
